I've been at the museum since 2010. I love to read and learn; it's rare that a day goes by at work when I'm not suppressing the urge to spew out something cool I just learned to my coworkers. In my spare time, I play the 'cello, snuggle my dog and reminisce about snowmen and Nor'easters.
I work Sunday through Thursday. You can find me raking the Farmyard in the morning or training the donkey and dwarf goats in the afternoon.

QuikPic: Happy Passover

I’m not a big fan of Matzo. I usually have leftover after Passover so I bring it in for the critters. Jill uses it for training  and treats with the pigs.  This year, Henry is celebrating and eating matzo during Passover. Enjoy the last few days of Pesach!

At least someone likes Matzo.

Intern Enrichment Project

Our Interns, Jessica and Jamie, have started their enrichment project. They are interning with us Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays they take classes. for one of their classes they have to do an enrichment project for an animal. They decided to work with Henry, our woodchuck, to see if they could get him more active. We’ll report back (if you want) later in the semester to see what they learned, but in the meantime, here are some photos of what they built and their first day of watching Henry with their item:

I have worked in the animal department for about 5 years. Some of my favorites include ferrets and birds. I am also known for my weird obsession with things relevant to the 80's.
I work Tuesday-Saturday and can be seen training our pigs on occasion.

Henry & Galileo’s Super Bowl Prediction- 2013

The San Francisco 49ers go head to head with the Baltimore Ravens, so who is our woodchuck and opossum rooting for?

 

A few years ago Henry was right 

Last year we had a snafu with the video and Henry chose incorrectly, but Galileo was right.

Henry the Great

January 10th, 2013

Henry is our resident Woodchuck in Carolina Wildlife. Below are pictures of him getting some exercise time on the Keeper Hall. Keeper Katy found it a great opportunity to get him on the scale. We weigh our animals on schedules, some may be once a week, some may be once a month. In addition, anytime we have an opportunity to weigh an animal -we take it! Keeping a good record of animal weights is very important and can help decide diet changes or even bring up health concerns. Henry weighs a whooping 5.96 kg that translates to 13.11 lbs.

Groundhog Day 2012

Happy Groundhog Day!

Last year you may have remembered that our Groundhog/Woodchuck Henry, had an interview and predicted the Super Bowl winner last year.

This year Henry is in hibernation mode but still gets up every once in a while to eat a peanut or banana. Last year I took this video and in honor of Groundhog Day I thought I would post it.

Henry Explores Carolina Wildlife

Look at that shaved belly, Henry was recently neutered

This is Henry our Woodchuck otherwise known as a Groundhog.  The other morning, before we opened, Keeper Sarah gave Henry some much needed exercise time, in the people area of Carolina Wildlife. He enjoyed running back and forth, chasing us when he could, and checking out the exhibits.

Raisins Anyone?

Keeper Jill was organizing some kitchen cabinets and had 8 empty raisin boxes and a brilliant idea- Woodchuck enrichment. Keeper Sarah was scheduled inside the next day, she was warned about the potential mess she had waiting for her. And like a good sport she snapped a few photos before cleaning up.

hmmm what shall we do with 8 emtpy raisin boxes?

First we stacked them in a pyramid

We even put a few boxes up high for him to knock down

The first bite!

And they all fall down!

Each box had a small treat of sunflower seeds wrapped in newspaper

He seems to be enjoying it

The next morning
