QuikPic: goat and cats
May 4th, 2013The most interesting thing, to me, about this photo is not that there is a goat in my living room, but rather that my big cat on the floor (Scout) is resting on a cat toy. He does not play with cat toys.
Actually, Scout hasn’t rested on this carpet in I-don’t-know-how-long, and Kobi hasn’t slept on my chair until recently when the goat moved to my living room.

Looks like the cats are staking out their territory in the presence of the goat.

I agree with Jill. I think a “mullet” in the crowd would add the needed cultural diversity to the group.

Sorry Dad, we don’t have Suri alpacas; they’re the ones with the dreads. Our 4 girls are all Huacayas. I’m voting for at least 1 mohawk.

QuikPic: Max gets weighed
March 1st, 2013The Keepers, have been using the new scale in the farmyard to get weights on the animals. That means a lot of training for Max: getting a leash on; walking “nicely” without pulling Kent around; no side field trips to eat plants; get all four feet on the scale and hold still… Success has occurred. Any guesses as to how much the heaviest animal at the Museum weighs?

1200 lbs? What is that, like 550 kilos?
-
Bonus info: When Max stood on the scale the plate noticibly lowered itself and I have NEVER seen it do that before.
-
How much do the bear’s weigh versus Max?
-
Wow..does this mean Max’s weight is more than the combined weight of all four bears? I remember seeing a keeper’s blog of him being bottle fed!!
-
How does Max’s weight compare to Mr. Mooster? And how does it compare to an average jersey steer of his age? Just curious.
-
Congrats Kent (and Max)!

QuiKPic: Raptor handling
February 27th, 2013I train the keepers and educators to handle our two program raptors. (Misha and Christopher). I’ve completed five weeks of work with Molly, but she still needs to practice. She’s decided to send me a photo every time she take out one of the birds to show me of her commitment. Way to go Molly!

QuikPic: Meet our Interns Jamie & Jessica
February 6th, 2013We’re fortunate again to have two wonderful interns from Davidson County Community College with us this semester. Jamie (on the left) and Jessica are in their first year in the Zoo and Aquarium Science program. They’ll be with us until mid-April. Say hi if you see them around.

QuikPic: What happened here?

From what I recall, Aaron had picked up a bag of wolf food and threw it over his shoulder. As he walked out of the kitchen and into the hall it split open in the back and left a trail of chow behind him. Jessi and I were standing there, and I think even some others were down the hall as well to witness it (you can tell we got a good laugh at Aaron’s expense.) I also remember that *some* of us may have walked on it and crushed it, or kicked it down the hall to make the clean-up a little bit more ammusing.;)

It was very very very funny! That’s what I remember

She ate the skin too which a lot of geckos do.
I made sure to look for it the next morning and it was all gone
Wow!! How often and why does Gordon shed her skin? And how long does it take for the entire shedding process?
That’s impressive!
Depending if its still growing it will shed more but usually every few months
However, we dont really know because like I said a lot of the geckos eat their skin
I noticed the day before though she was a different color then usual so that was one hint
